Sprained Ankle Rules McNabb Out for Redskins-Jets

A sprained ankle will keep Donovan McNabb on the sideline Friday night when the Washington Redskins play the New York Jets.

McNabb has been unable to practice since getting hurt in Saturday night’s preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

“It’s quite sore,” Coach Mike Shanahan said, “and I don’t think he could go if it was a regular season game. He’s got to rehab it.”

McNabb was limping badly in the locker room after the game was wearing a walking boot Monday. On Tuesday, he watched practice with a wrap around his lower left leg and ankle.

Shanahan said he didn’t think McNabb had a “bad ankle sprain” and that the quarterback has been walking on the treadmill to rehab the injury.

The sprain is a setback for a veteran quarterback trying to master a new offense for the first time since he was a rookie with thePhiladelphia Eagles in 1999. McNabb had his share of peaks and valleys in training camp practices and during the first two preseason games. He struggled with timing and accuracy but did a good job handling pressure against the Ravens on Saturday.

In two games, McNabb has completed 16 of 34 passes for 264 yards with one touchdown, one interception and a 71.2 rating.

Rex Grossman is expected to start against the Jets in the game that is considered the dress rehearsal for the regular season. Backups John Beck and Richard Bartel could both see playing time.

Fullback Mike Sellers will also miss the game after spraining his left knee against the Ravens.

Also still on the sidelines is receiver Malcolm Kelly, who hurt his hamstring working out with McNabb in Arizona the week before training camp began and has barely been able to practice since. Kelly was hoping for a breakout season in his third year in the league, but he’s no longer a certainty to make the roster at one of the most competitive positions on the team.

“Let’s not count anybody out,” Shanahan said. “Let’s take it day by day. I saw him run some routes out there today. He looked a lot better, almost full-speed straight ahead. Hopefully he’ll be able to go next week.”

There will also be a new running back with the first team on Friday. After starting Clinton Portis in the first game and Larry Johnson in the second game, Shanahan said Willie Parker will get the nod against the Jets. Portis has played well and remains the overwhelming favorite to start opening day, while Johnson had a poor game against the Ravens and will get some carries Friday as well. Both Parker and Johnson need to work on pass protection.

“I’m excited to show what I can do,” Parker said. “I guess I’m the running back who has been on the out, supposedly. So I’m definitely ready.”

Jets Can Survive ‘Ugly’ Feud with Holdout Revis

NFL analysts are divided on how long All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis will continue to hold out, and how much the holdout could affect the New York Jets for the upcoming season.

Former NFL lineman Randy Cross applauds the Jets for not yielding to Revis' contract demands.

"Even as a former pro player, I have a hard time working up much anger on behalf of Revis," Cross, now an analyst for CBS, said Tuesday. "He busted his salary slot when he was drafted. He got a huge amount of money up front, and he still has three years left on his deal. Life is often about timing, and sometimes your timing sucks.

"If he doesn't want to be a part of what the Jets have done, he should talk to players like Al Harris, who sat out the entire 1985 season with the Bears. He made more money the year after, but he doesn't have a Super Bowl ring."

If Revis sits out the season, former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason still believes the team can win Super Bowl 45.

"Sure they can," Esiason said. "They lost Kris Jenkins last year, one of the best defensive linemen in football, and went all the way to the AFC championship game with a rookie quarterback. One thing we have learned: Rex Ryan will have a great defense, regardless of who is on the field.

"It's about scheme; it's about intensity. That's what they bring every week."

That said, the All-Pro cornerback probably won't miss the entire season.

"I can understand why he wants the money," Esiason said. "But with three years left on his contract, he has to lessen his demands. And the Jets have to realize that he's young enough that they can probably guarantee a lot of money and not get burned. I do believe there'll be an agreement.

"I can't imagine Darrelle Revis will ever sit out the whole season because he'll never make up the money he'd lose this year if he sat out."

Former Washington Redskins general manager Charley Casserly, however, is not convinced Revis will reach agreement on a new contract anytime soon.

Casserly has in indirect connection to the Revis holdout, too. Casserly was the Redskins' general manager when Revis' uncle, Sean Gilbert, held out the entire season with the Redskins. Gilbert and Revis have a close relationship.

"The guy he's listening to, Sean Gilbert, never changed his demands through the whole negotiations," Casserly said. "So I don't look for any discounts from Revis. And without Revis, your defense is going to be a notch down."

Jets officials have successfully negotiated several important contracts—agreeing to a new deal with All-Pro center Nick Mangold on Tuesday and recently giving new deals to Pro Bowl left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Yet, a new deal for Revis remains undone and the Jets might be forced to prove how good their defense is without its best player.

"The good thing is that they drafted (cornerback) Kyle Wilson, they brought in (cornerback) Antonio Cromartie and (defensive end) Jason Taylor," said Rich Gannon, a former NFL quarterback and current CBS analyst. "I think this defense could be better than last season, even without Revis. But with him, they're phenomenal. They have so much more flexibility.

"He's the best cover guy in the game, but I don't know when he'll be back. This thing seems to have gotten ugly."

Saints Working Overtime on Kick Coverage Lapses

Saints Working Overtime on Kick Coverage Lapses

If Coach Sean Payton is to breathe easier during the Saints' next game, special teams coordinator Greg McMahon will have to make measurable progress with his kickoff and punt coverage teams.

"The last two games we have not covered kicks very well at all. It's obvious," McMahon conceded after practice on Tuesday. "When you put the film on and you look, it'd be easy if it was one guy. But we've had our share of inconsistencies."

The Saints have given up three kickoff returns of more than 50 yards, and a 40-yard punt return, in their first two pre-season games.

In their second pre-season game last weekend against Houston, the Saints allowed kickoff returns of 63, 55, 28 and 26 yards, after which Payton talked of holding his breath every time his team kicked off.

For now, Payton is trying to be patient, noting that some inconsistency on special teams is common early in the pre-season because so many young players are rotated onto the field as coaches try to decide whom to keep and whom to cut.

"We've got a lot of guys going in and out of the games, and so more importantly, it's who's going to play in those core units," Payton said. "A lot of the decisions we make with the final roster is predicated on how guys play in the kicking game."

Special teams captain Troy Evans was cut shortly after Tuesday's practice.

Earlier Tuesday, he said that after the Saints' allowed a 52-yard kickoff return and 40-yard punt return in their first pre-season game at New England, he couldn't sleep.

"We know what we do wrong. We see it. And that's the thing with special teams. You make one little mistake and it can cost you, and it looks bad because it's 60 yards," Evans said before he learned he had been released.

"It's always difficult when you have to make decisions such as releasing players that have contributed as much to the Saints as Troy has," Payton said in a statement. "Troy was our special teams captain the past two seasons and provided us with tremendous depth at the outside linebacker position the past three seasons."

The mistakes nearly cost the Saints their punter, Thomas Morstead, who was forced to make the tackle on a 40-yard punt return by the Patriots' Julian Edelman. Morstead hurt his left shoulder on the play and did not punt the rest of that game, but was able to return last weekend against Houston.

McMahon and Evans said missed tackles have been part of the problem. They said other mistakes included players being pushed out of their lanes as they advance downfield, or allowing the returner to get to the outside when the assignment was to force the return toward the middle.

This week, with the San Diego Chargers coming to the Louisiana Superdome on Friday night, the Saints have spent more time than usual studying special teams film and working on kick coverage fundamentals in practice.

"Hey, when things aren't going the way they need to go, let's get the dang thing fixed," McMahon said. "There's definitely a sense of urgency with these guys and they understand. They look at the film and they see it and go, 'We've got to get that right.' They can see where the mistakes are. We all can. It's glaring."

The undercurrent to such problems this pre-season is the fact that the Saints, at least during the 2009 regular season, were among the worst in the league in the same areas. New Orleans ranked 29th on kickoff coverage and 32nd — dead last — in punt coverage.

During the playoffs, however, the Saints inserted more defensive starters on special teams, and the coverage units were good enough for New Orleans to win the Super Bowl. Opponents' punt return averages dropped from 14.3 yards in the regular season to 3.8 in the playoffs, while opponents' kickoff return averages dropped from 24.5 yards to 23.6.

"Special teams is like its own entity. You've got guys who specialize in it and that's what I do and I take a lot of pride in it," said backup safety Chris Reis. "It's one of those things you can't really figure out you've got let it go, keep working hard and keep pushing through and you'll start gelling. It'll come together, we've just got have that nasty, attack attitude."

Shanahan Meets with Haynesworth, Keeps It Private

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan met with Albert Haynesworth on Monday and kept the conversation to himself, saying it’s “completely ridiculous” to keep talking about it publicly.

“If you guys want to talk about football, we’ll talk about football,” Shanahan said. “But to keep on talking about things outside of football to me is completely ridiculous. I did have a conversation with him. If you want to talk about football, we’ll talk about football.”

So Shanahan gave no response to the strong words uttered by the disgruntled nose tackle following Saturday’s loss to theBaltimore Ravens. Haynesworth accused the coach of mischaracterizing the reason he missed practice last week and said he will stay away from the Redskins’ offseason workout program again next year.

Reports say Haynesworth was suffering from a muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis, but Shanahan told AOL Fanhouse on Sunday that he was “not aware of that.” Shanahan had given various reasons for Haynesworth’s inability to practice, eventually attributing it to a headache.

Haynesworth did not talk to reporters Monday, but was back at practice for the first time in a week.

Shanahan has maintained that the two-time All-Pro tackle must practice regularly to play and work his way back to a starting role. He has made Haynesworth practice and play with the backups.

Haynesworth, who failed a conditioning test and missed the first nine days of training camp practice, said Saturday he shouldn’t have been playing with the reserves during the Ravens game.

“We’re going to practice him as much as we can and get him ready to play,” Shanahan said Monday. “Hopefully he doesn’t miss any practices, and when he plays he plays well.”

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, who has worked closely with Haynesworth amid the player-head coach feud, saidHaynesworth is “in the mix” to become a starter before the regular season opener Sept. 12.

“Obviously he’s a good football player when he’s in shape, healthy, ready to go,” Haslett said. “We need to find that out here in the next three weeks. … He just has to get going, that’s all. It’s time to stop all this and just go.”

Haynesworth’s teammates are looking forward to putting the dispute behind them.

“Sometimes there’s frustration that takes place, but any time you have 80 players on the roster you’re going to have little things come up,” linebacker London Fletcher said. “Certain things should just stay in the locker room. Nowadays things get out.”

Cornerback Carlos Rogers said players are more worried about their own jobs than Haynesworth’s situation.

“I don’t think it affects nobody in this locker room,” Rogers said. “They worry about what they’ve got to do. That’s been going on since the summer. We’ve really been going without him.”

Overshadowed Orton Looking Sharp in Preseason

Every day, Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton hums passes across the team’s practice fields with a precision he’s never quite had before. His receivers marvel that he is so accurate they don’t have to break stride or reach to catch the ball. They say he is as good as they have seen him. One, Brandon Lloyd, says the ball “just sticks in your hands.”

If the Broncos can escape mediocrity this season, Orton will probably be a major reason why.

And yet the better he looks, the more the fans who visit training camp refuse to care. They don’t shout his name. They don’t wear his jersey. And when practice ends nobody screams or begs for him, or even shows him a whit of loyalty.

Such is life in the summer of Tim Tebow, where the third-string quarterback is the most popular man on the field.

“It’s been an interesting summer,” Orton says with a small laugh.

He then waves his hand dismissively.

“I don’t care about the glare at all,” Orton elaborates. “Listen, I live to play football. I don’t want to be anything other than a football player in regards to all the fanfare. I just want to play football.”

It is not an indictment of Tebow that the team’s first-round draft pick is not ready yet for the NFL. He was always going to be a project that would take two or three years before he develops into a starter. But maybe no one understood just how good Orton was about to become. And while it is still only August and none of the games count for anything yet, there is something different about Orton.

“His maturation process has been really cool to see,” says Lloyd, who played with Orton on the ’08 Bears, then signed with the Broncos last offseason.

To many, the thought of Orton being “the answer at QB” must seem like a joke. In his five-year career he has hardly inspired. InChicago he couldn’t beat Rex Grossman to be the Bears starting quarterback. When the Broncos were trying to trade disgruntled quarterback Jay Cutler and picked Orton over then Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, many in the Redskins organization soured even more on Campbell. If Denver wanted Orton over Campbell, then how bad must Campbell be?

In 33 career starts – including 15 each for the ’08 Bears and ’09 Broncos – he has a 19-14 record. He does not have a strong arm. He’s not elusive. He doesn’t seem to do anything special. But handed Tom Brady’s offense last year by former New England Patriots offensive coordinator and current Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, and an ailing Orton began to thrive. He threw for 3,802 yards and 21 touchdowns. Yet because he was Kyle Orton, 3,802 yards and 21 touchdowns didn’t mean much of anything.

If this summer is any indication, observers may start taking more notice.

As Orton reflects on camp, he smiles. He looks down at his feet. His ankles, he says, feel good again. It’s been a few years since he was completely healthy. He arrived in Denver with a bad left ankle and the injury only got worse during last season. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t plant his feet. Nothing felt right.

Now that the ankles have healed, it’s so easy to throw.

“My velocity is better, my accuracy is better,” he says. “That comes from finally being healthy.”

He also admits that while the drafting of Tebow did not openly bother him, the fact the team used a first-round pick on a quarterback did provide a measure of motivation. But not as much as finding out he would not be an unrestricted free agent as he once expected – a quirk of the uncapped year. This meant he would not get the multi-million dollar deal he had been anticipating. He spent the winter more motivated than ever before. His patience and approach were partially rewarded as the Broncos last week signed him to a one-year extension through 2011 for as much as $9 million.

Still, not to be overshadowed is the fact that he might finally have matured as a quarterback. He has had a chance to start for two years now. And being in the second year of McDaniels’ offense has made him more comfortable. Even McDaniels admits players need a full year to grasp its nuances.

With a greater comfort and understanding of the system comes freedom. While Orton seems to crave predictability, he also likes to scan the field for possibilities, Lloyd explains.

“In Chicago he was always in a box,” Lloyd said.

In Denver there is no box.

The other day, McDaniels said Orton “can go higher,” as a quarterback.

“He’s playing very smart right now, he’s very accurate. There’s really nothing that we’re not doing offensively that I’ve ever done in the past that he’s incapable of doing and running at a high level. But there is still more to do. I know he thinks that.”

His team seems to believe.

If only the fans could too.

Eli Manning to Play Saturday

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning said he will play Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.

Manning practiced Monday afternoon wearing a blue Giants baseball cap instead of a helmet. For the most part, everything looked normal as Manning identified the middle linebacker, barked out a few signals and took the snap from Shaun O'Hara.

"I liked his tempo right away," Coach Tom Coughlin said after practice. "He got the ball out of his hand quick and made some real good decisions. So we're glad to have him back on the practice field."

He expects to be able to put on a helmet for Wednesday's practice.

Manning had 12 stitches removed from his forehead on Friday and sat out Saturday's preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"It feels fine, the stitches are out," Manning said prior to practice. "I'm not wearing a helmet today for practice, will be in a hat, but it feels fine and is not hurting. It's exposed, as long as I don't get hit in the head, it will be all right."

Manning suffered a three-inch gash when he had his chin strap knocked loose after a collision with running back Brandon Jacobs on a busted play against the Jets Aug. 16. Manning's helmet then came off when he was hit from behind by Jets linebacker Calvin Pace, and the quarterback's forehead struck Jets safety Jim Leonhard's facemask.

Manning's return to the field comes at what is typically the most critical time in the preseason -- the third preseason game. That is when teams usually play their starters the longest before resting them in the final preseason game.

As it happens, the Giants' offense may be at its healthiest this week. Jacobs practiced despite missing Saturday's game with a stiff neck. The running back said before practice his neck stiffened because he was doing shrugs in the weight room and started without really warming up.

"I'll be out there today, full speed, what's called upon me to do," said Jacobs, who will play Saturday against the Ravens. "It was painful but it is something that was going to go away with proper treatment. It was never really a big issue with me."

The Giants' offense needs the work. The unit has been limited in the preseason with starting guards Chris Snee (knee) and Rich Seubert (hand) out. The team also was forced to use third-string quarterback Rhett Bomar the whole game against the Steelers because of injuries to Manning and backup Jim Sorgi (shoulder), which meant the game plan had to be reduced.

Snee and Seubert are due back this week and the Giants have most of their tight ends back, too. They have played short-handed most of training camp with Kevin Boss (hamstring), Travis Beckum (hamstring) and Scott Chandler (hip) bothered by injuries.

"It is good that everybody is getting healthy," Manning said before practice. "It is something that happens in training camp. If there is a time to get everybody back, this is the time you want everybody back when you are getting close to the start of the season, it's the third preseason game. We got a long week, a full week between games, looking forward to a great week of practice and getting everybody back healthy."

Manning said he didn't know how long he will play against Baltimore.

"Whatever Coach Coughlin wants to do and what he thinks, I know I'm playing," Manning said. "How long I play, I will leave that up to the head coach."

In other Giants injury news, wide receiver Ramses Barden has a stress fracture of a transverse process in his lower back and cornerback Aaron Ross is dealing with plantar fasciitis, according to the team.

Barden has had a lower back issue since before the preseason opener against the Jets. He started that game and has not played or practiced since. He will not play Saturday.

Ross played last Saturday against the Steelers and did well on a punt return. He might be questionable for Saturday's game.

The team also announced backup safety Michael Johnson's back injury involves a disc issue. He is not expected to play Saturday.
